Type of Bet Description When to Use Example
Pre-flop A bet made before the flop is dealt. To raise the pot and narrow the field of players. A player raises to 3x the big blind.
Post-flop A bet made after the flop is dealt. To continue betting for value or to bluff. A player bets 1/2 the pot after the flop.
Turn A bet made after the turn card is dealt. To bet for value or to try to steal the pot. A player bets 2/3 the pot after the turn.
River A bet made after the river card is dealt. To bet for value or to bluff. A player bets the pot on the river.
Check A player can check if no one has bet before them. When you have a strong hand and want to see the next card for free.
Call A player can call if someone has bet before them. When you have a hand that is worth at least the amount of the bet. A player calls a bet of 2x the big blind.
Fold A player can fold if they do not want to continue betting. When you have a hand that is not worth the amount of the bet. A player folds after seeing the flop.
Raise A player can raise if someone has bet before them. When you have a strong hand and want to increase the pot size. A player raises to 4x the big blind after someone has limped in.
All-in A player can go all-in if they want to bet their entire stack. When you have a very strong hand and want to put pressure on your opponents. A player goes all-in with a pair of aces.
